I. Building Entrance Issues1


            A. First floor front entrance

 

First floor front entrance is not accessible. There are steps with 9 risers to the front door.

 

The door hardware on the front entrance is not accessible.

 

There are no directional signs at the first floor front entrance.

 

There is no level maneuvering space at the first floor entrance.

 


            Remedy:

 

            1.         Provide accessible door hardware. Standards § 4.13.9.

 

            2.         Provide directional signs at the first floor front entrance indicating that the accessible entrance is in the rear. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.2, 4.30.3, 4.30.5.

 

            3.         Provide directional signage in front of building by new walkway from Woodland Road and Mellon Center indicating a ramped entrance in the rear. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.2, 4.30.3, 4.30.5.

 

 

            B. First floor rear entrance with ramp

 

There are no directional signs indicating a ramped entrance.

 

There is inadequate maneuvering space to the ramped entrance.

 

The lower portion of the ramp has a 7.5% slope with no handrail on the outer side of the ramp.

 

The level landing at the change of direction is only 36" in depth.

 

The upper portion of the ramp has a 9.7 % slope.

 

1The analysis of Beatty Hall is limited to the exterior points of entry because there were no floor plans available for documenting the floor and room locations. 


 

            Remedy

 

            1.         The 9.7% slope of the upper ramp is too steep and the current level landing at the change of direction should be 60" in depth. Tear off existing upper and lower ramps and build a new ramp that meets ADA standards. Standards §§ 4.8.1 through 4.8.8. The existing steps and platform can remain intact. A single continuous ramp would be best.

 

            2.         Provide a paved, level accessible route to the new ramp from a paved, van accessible parking space. Standards §§ 4.3.1 through 4.3.8.

 

            3.         Ensure that the new ramp has handrails with extensions. Standards § 4.8.5(2), Fig. 17.

 

            4.         Pave the accessible route to the new ramp. Standards §§ 4.3.6, 4.5.1.
