I. Building Entrance Issues
Entrance Location
A. Pedestrian Entrance from Campus (Off Porte Cochere over pool)
The threshold at this entrance is inaccessible and this entrance leads only to inaccessible stairs.
The door hardware is inaccessible.
The maneuvering space is inadequate.
The maneuvering space is not level.
There are no directional signs.
Remedy:
1. Create a new accessible exterior entrance along the front of Mellon Center near the accessible parking space. Standards §§ 4.13, 4.14.
2. Install a directional sign indicating that the accessible entrance is the main entrance to the first floor at the East end of the building. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.2, 4.30.3, 4.30.5.
3. Create an ADA compliant sidewalk that links the roof-top garden in the rear of Mellon Center to a van accessible parking space located along the right side of Mellon Center. Standards § 4.3.
B. Main Entrance to First Floor
The designated accessible parking space near the front entrance has a 4.7% cross slope at the access aisle.
There are no directional signs.
Remedy:
1. Remove and re-pave the portion with a steep cross slope so it does not slope more than 2% in any direction. Standards § 4.6.3.
2. Install a van accessible parking space. Standards §§ 4.1.2(5)(b), 4.6.4.
3. Install an accessible directional sign indicating that this is the accessible entrance. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.2, 4.30.3, 4.30.5.
C. Interior Approach from Dining Hall on First Floor
The door hardware is inaccessible.
The maneuvering space is inadequate.
The maneuvering space is not level.
There are no accessible directional signs
Remedy:
1. Install a magnetic hold-open device or move the door and make it flush with the wall on the left side. Standards § 4.13.6.
2. Install an accessible directional sign indicating that the accessible entrance is the main entrance to the first floor at the East end of the building. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.2, 4.30.3, 4.30.5.
II. Accessible Route Issues to Student Spaces
Interior Routes by Floor Level
A. Basement Route to Grad Student Lounge
The door hardware (knobs) is not accessible.
There are no accessible room signs.
Remedy:
1. Install accessible door hardware. Standards § 4.13.9.
2. Install accessible room signs. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.4, 4.30.5, 4.30.6.
B. Basement Route From Elevator to Other Student/Faculty Spaces on this Level
There are protruding objects (sconce light fixtures).
There are no accessible room signs on this level.
Remedy:
1. Remove the protruding sconce light fixtures or screen with cane detectable element. Standards § 4.4.
2. Install accessible room signs. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.4, 4.30.5, 4.30.6.
C. First Floor Public Spaces (Administrative Social Rooms and Offices)
The door hardware (knobs) is not accessible.
There are protruding objects (sconce light fixtures).
There are no accessible room signs.
Remedy:
1. Install accessible door hardware. Standards § 4.13.9.
2. Remove the protruding sconce light fixtures or screen with cane detectable element. Standards § 4.4.
3. Install accessible room signs. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.4, 4.30.5, 4.30.6.
D. Second Floor Public Spaces (President’s Office and other Administrative Offices)
The door hardware (knobs) is not accessible.
The doors are too narrow to the conference room.
There are protruding objects (sconce light fixtures).
The maneuvering space is inadequate.
There is a 9.8% ramp to the conference room by the elevator without handrails.
There are no accessible room signs.
Remedy:
1. Install accessible door hardware. Standards § 4.13.9.
2. Keep both doors to the conference room open when in use. Standards § 4.13.6.
3. Remove the protruding sconce light fixtures or screen with cane detectable element. Standards § 4.4.
4. Reverse the swing of the door and add a magnetic hold-open device or relocate wall so it is flush with the elevator wall to eliminate maneuvering space problems. Standards § 4.13.6.
5. Install accessible handrails at the 9.8% ramp to the maximum extent feasible. Standards §§ 4.8.5, 4.26.
6. Install accessible room signs. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.4, 4.30.5, 4.30.6.
E. Third Floor Public Spaces (Administration and HR Officers)
The door hardware (knobs) is not accessible.
There are steps making this route inaccessible.
There are no accessible room signs.
Remedy:
1. Install accessible door hardware. Standards § 4.13.9.
2. Make the services of the offices on the third floor accessible to students with disabilities. 28 C.F.R. § 36.305.
3. Install accessible room signs. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.4, 4.30.5, 4.30.6.
III. Primary Student Space Issues
Student/Faculty Spaces
A. Basement Level Spaces (Conference Room & Lounge)
The door hardware (knobs) is inaccessible.
There are protruding objects (sconce light fixtures).
Remedy:
1. Install accessible door hardware. Standards § 4.13.9.
2. Remove the protruding sconce light fixtures or screen with cane detectable element. Standards § 4.4.
B. First Floor Social and Office Spaces
The door hardware (knobs) is inaccessible.
Remedy:
1. Install accessible door hardware. Standards § 4.13.9.
C. Second Floor Public Spaces & Offices
The door hardware (knobs) is inaccessible.
Remedy:
1. Install accessible door hardware. Standards § 4.13.9.
D. Third Floor Public Spaces & Offices
The door hardware (knobs) is inaccessible.
There are protruding objects (sconce light fixtures).
Remedy:
1. Install accessible door hardware. Standards § 4.13.9.
2. Remove the protruding sconce light fixtures or screen with cane detectable element. Standards § 4.4.
IV. Restroom Accessibility
Student Restrooms
A. Basement Level Unisex Restroom
The mirror in the basement level unisex restroom is too high.
Remedy:
1. Lower the mirror to meet ADA Standards or, in the alternative, install a full length mirror. Standards 4.19.6.
B. Second Floor Unisex Restroom (by President’s Office)
Remedy:
1. Install an accessible directional sign indicating that the accessible restroom is the basement level unisex restroom. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.2, 4.30.3, 4.30.5.
C. All Other Unisex Restrooms
Remedy:
1. Install accessible directional signs at these restrooms indicating that the accessible restroom is the basement level unisex restroom. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.2, 4.30.3, 4.30.5.
V. Miscellaneous Accessibility Issues
The required interior accessible approach route to the Dining Hall in the attached addition will be compliant with minor modifications to door hardware.
Remedy:
1. Make minor modifications to the door hardware to make it accessible. Standards § 4.13.9.
