I.         Building Entrance Issues


            Entrance Location

 

            A.        First Floor Dorm Lobby Entrance (North side of building)


            The first floor dorm lobby entrance is inaccessible.  


            There is a ¾" offset at threshold.


            There is a protruding object (yellow telephone) at this entrance that is inaccessible.


            There are no directional signs.

 

                        Remedy:

 

                        1.         Leave the ¾" offset at threshold as is, but bevel at 1:2 each side of the threshold. Standards § 4.13.8.

 

                        2.         Relocate yellow telephone box to the opposite side of the entrance door so it will be cane detectable. Standards § 4.4.

 

                        3.         Install directional signage indicating that there are two accessible entrances on the West side of building, one permitting access to the Woodland Cafe on the first floor and an interior lift to the lower level art gallery, physician assistant classrooms, skills labs, and exam rooms. An adjacent accessible entrance on the West side of Woodland Hall also permits access from the new Quad to the lower level classrooms, and physician assistant exam rooms. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.2, 4.30.3, 4.30.5.

 

            B.        First Floor Woodland Cafe Entry (West side of building/new quad)

 

                        Remedy:

 

                        1.         Install a directional sign indicating that this is an accessible entrance. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.2, 4.30.3, 4.30.5. 

 

            C.        Lower Level Entry to West side of Woodland Hall

 

                        Remedy:

 

                        1.         Install a directional sign indicating that this is an accessible entrance. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.2, 4.30.3, 4.30.5.


D.        Basement Entry to Infirmary

  

The Basement Entry to the Infirmary is not accessible.

The approach ramp has a 6.6% cross slope.



The approach ramp has a running slope of 10.7%.

The fire alarm in the infirmary does not have enough strobe lights.

There are no directional signs.

 

                        Remedy:

 

                        1.         Cut pavement in front of door in order to level it. Standards § 4.13.6.

 

                        2.         Replace the door to the basement infirmary entrance. Standards § 4.13.

 

                        3.         Add sufficient strobe lights to the visual fire alarm in the infirmary in accordance with the requirements in paragraph 12 of the Agreement. Standards § 4.28.3.

 

                        4.         Install a directional sign indicating that this is an accessible entrance. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.2, 4.30.3, 4.30.5.

                                                

II.       Accessible Route Issues to Student Spaces


            Interior Routes by Floor Level

 

            A.        Basement Theater Scenery Shop

 

There are steps making the route to the basement theater scenery shop inaccessible.

            The maneuvering space is inadequate.

 

There are no accessible visual fire alarms.


            There are no accessible room signs.


                        Remedy:

 

No changes will be made to this area which is currently used for storing theater props and scenery. In the event that Chatham University decides to use this area for educational and/or related activities, it will do the following:

 

                        1.         Install an ADA compliant lift and ensure that there is adequate maneuvering space to access the area. Standards § 4.11.

 

                        2.         Install accessible hardware on doors. Standards § 4.13.9.

 

                        3.         Install visual fire alarms in accordance with the requirement in paragraph 12 of the Agreement. Standards § 4.28.3

 

                        4.         Install accessible room signs. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.4, 4.30.5, 4.30.6.

            B.        Basement Infirmary

 

            There are no accessible room signs.


                        Remedy:

 

                        1.         Install accessible room signs. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.4, 4.30.5, 4.30.6.


            C.        Second Floor Dormitory


            The door hardware (knobs) is inaccessible.


            There are no accessible room signs.


                        Remedy:

 

                        1.         Install accessible door hardware. Standards § 4.13.9.

 

                        2.         Install accessible room signs. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.4, 4.30.5, 4.30.6.

 

D. Third Floor Dormitory


            The door hardware (knobs) is inaccessible.


            There are no accessible room signs.


                        Remedy:

 

                        1.         Install accessible door hardware. Standards § 4.13.9.

 

                        2.         Install accessible room signs. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.4, 4.30.5, 4.30.6.

                        

            E.        Fourth Floor Dormitory


            The door hardware (knobs) is inaccessible.


            There are no accessible room signs.


                        Remedy:

 

                        1.         Install accessible door hardware. Standards § 4.13.9.

 

                        2.         Install accessible room signs. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.4, 4.30.5, 4.30.6.

 

III.      Primary Student Space Issues


            Student Spaces

 

            A.        Basement Infirmary


            There is no visual fire alarm.


                        Remedy:

 

                        1.         Install a visual fire alarm in the Basement Infirmary in accordance with the requirement in paragraph 12 of the Agreement. Standards § 4.28.3.

 

            B.        First Floor Commons Area


            The door width is inadequate.


                        Remedy:

 

                        1.         Replace the pair of 28" wide doors to the large computer lab with an ADA compliant door, but leave the pairs of 30" wide doors that lead out to the lounge area from the lobby. Standards § 4.13.


            C.        Second Floor Dormitory

 

The door hardware is inaccessible.

 

The dormitory rooms typically have door knob hardware, and limited maneuvering space at latch side of door.


                        Remedy:

 

                        1.         Install accessible door hardware. Standards § 4.13.9.

 

                        2.       Because the 2nd floor of Woodland has the greatest diversity of single and double rooms and restrooms, provide five accessible dormitory rooms on this floor in compliance with the requirements of Chapter 9 of the Standards.


            D.        Third Floor Dormitory


            The door hardware is inaccessible.

 

The dormitory rooms typically have door knob hardware, and limited maneuvering space at latch side of door.


                        Remedy:

 

                        1.         Install accessible door hardware. Standards § 4.13.9.


            E.        Fourth Floor Dormitory

 

The door hardware at the 4th floor dormitory is inaccessible

 

The dormitory rooms typically have door knob hardware, and limited maneuvering space at latch side of door.


                        Remedy:

 

                        1.         Install accessible door hardware. Standards § 4.13.9.


            F.        Surveyed Dormitory Room

 

The surveyed dormitory room had only a 18" access space between beds and a 27" wide closet with knob hardware.

 

The surveyed dormitory room had a limited 5" maneuvering space at strike side of door and door knob hardware at entry door.


                        Remedy:

 

                        1.         Install accessible door hardware. Standards § 4.13.9.

 

                        2.         Make the space between the beds at least 36". Standards § 4.3.3.

 

IV.      Restroom Accessibility


            Student Restrooms

 

            A.        Basement Infirmary Women’s Restroom


            The accessible lavatory has no wrap at the piping.


                        Remedy:

 

                        1.         Install wrap on lavatory piping. Standards § 4.19.4.

 

            B.        Basement Infirmary Men’s Restroom

 

The accessible lavatory has no wrap at the piping.


                        Remedy:

 

                        1.         Install accessible wrap on lavatory piping. Standards § 4.19.4.

 

            C.        First Floor Commons Women’s Restroom


            The accessible lavatory has no wrap at piping.

 

            There is no accessible signage on the door.

 

                        Remedy:

 

                        1.         Install wrap on lavatory piping. Standards § 4.19.4.

 

                        2.         Install accessible signage on latch side of the door. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.4, 4.30.5, 4.30.6.

 

            D.        First Floor Commons Men’s Restroom         


            There is no wrap on the lavatory piping.


            There is no accessible signage on the door.

                        Remedy:

 

                        1.         Install wrap on lavatory piping. Standards § 4.19.4.

 

                        2.         Install accessible signage on the latch side of the door. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.4, 4.30.5, 4.30.6.

 

            E.        Second Floor Dorm - Small Unisex Designated Accessible Restroom

 

            The accessible lavatory has no wrap at the piping.

 

            The grab bars are inaccessible.

 

There is no accessible signage on the door of the 2nd Floor Designated Accessible Restroom.


                        Remedy:

 

                        1.         Install wrap on lavatory piping. Standards § 4.19.4.


                        2.         Install accessible grab bars. Standards § 4.16.4.

 

                        3.         Install accessible room signs. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.4, 4.30.5, 4.30.6.


            F.        Second Floor Dorm - Large Common Use Women’s Restroom

 

The toilet is not accessible.

 

The bathtub is not accessible (no grab bars).


            There are no directional signs.

 

                        Remedy:

 

                        1.         Provide a fully accessible common-use women’s bathroom on this floor. Standards § 4.23.

  

                        2.       Install a directional sign. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.2, 4.30.3, 4.30.5.


            G.        Third Floor Women’s Restroom

   

                                 Remedy:

 

                        1.         Provide directional signage indicating that the accessible women’s restroom is on the second floor. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.2, 4.30.3, 4.30.5.


            H.        Fourth Floor Women’s Restroom

            

                        Remedy:

 

                        1.         Provide directional signage indicating that the accessible women’s restroom is on the second floor. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.2, 4.30.3, 4.30.5.

 

V.        Miscellaneous Accessibility Issues


            The dormitory lobby counter is mounted at 41 ½" above floor.

 

Except at Infirmary restrooms, there is no signage with raised or brailled characters located at the strike side of the doors to the rooms.


            There are no visual fire alarms in the designated accessible dorm rooms.


            There is no visual fire alarm in the laundry room.

 

The floor identification is mounted on the elevator jams but there are no braille or raised letters.

                        Remedy:

 

                        1.         Provide at least one counter that is accessible in accordance with ADA Standards. In the alternative, provide an auxiliary counter with a maximum height of 36 inches in close proximity to the main counter or provide equivalent facilitation. Standards § 7.2(2).

 

                        2..        Install a visual fire alarm in the designated accessible dorm rooms in accordance with the requirement in paragraph 12 of the Agreement. Standards § 4.28.3.

                                     

                        3.         Install a visual fire alarm in the laundry room in accordance with the requirement in paragraph 12 of the Agreement. Standards § 4.28.3.

 

                        4.         Install braille and raised letters on the elevator jams. Standards § 4.10.5.

 

                        5.         Provide signage with raised or brailled characters located at the strike side of the doors to rooms where needed. Standards § 4.30.4.
