I. Building Entrance Issues:
A. Main Entrance to Ground Floor (North end of building)
Remedy:
1. Install directional signage to the accessible entrance. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.2, 4.30.3, 4.30.5.
B. Main Entrance to the 1st Floor (East side of building)
There are no directional signs indicating the accessible entrance.
There is a 31" handrail height at the exterior ramp.
Remedy:
1. Install directional signage to this entrance. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.2, 4.30.3, 4.30.5.
C. Entrance to exit-stairwell landing (W. side of building)
Remedy:
1. Install directional signage to the main accessible entrance. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.2, 4.30.3, 4.30.5.
II. Accessible Route Issues to Student Spaces:
Interior routes by floor level
A. Ground Floor (Classrooms, Psychology Dept.)
There is a pair of exit-stair doors that allow only 27½" clear passage width.
There are no accessible room signs.
There is a power-assisted lift at the interior steps (7 risers) to Falk.
Intercom at ground floor power-assisted wheelchair lift is outside reach range of users.
There is a ramp with an 8.1% slope adjacent to 3 risers.
Remedy:
1. Provide accessible doors to classrooms where required. Standards § 4.13.5.
2. Provide raised and braille room signage in accordance with Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.4, 4.30.5, 4.30.6.
3. Provide an intercom at ground floor power-assisted wheelchair lift within the requisite reach range of users. Standards §§ 4.11, 4.2.5, 4.2.6, 4.27.
4. Provide accessible door hardware where required. Standards § 4.13.9.
B. 1st Floor (Classrooms & offices)
There are steps in the corridor and between buildings.
The door hardware (knobs) is not accessible.
There are no accessible room signs.
Remedy:
1. Provide raised and braille room signage in accordance with Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.4, 4.30.5, 4.30.6.
2. Provide accessible door hardware where required. Standards § 4.13.9.
C. 2nd Floor (Classrooms & offices)
There are steps in the corridor and between buildings.
The door hardware (knobs) is not accessible.
There are no accessible room signs.
Remedy:
1. Provide accessible door hardware to classrooms where required. Standards § 4.13.9.
2. Provide raised and braille room signage in accordance with Standards 4.30.1, 4.30.4, 4.30.5, 4.30.6.
III. Primary Student Space Issues:
There are steps in the corridor and between Coolidge and Falk on the 1st and 2nd floors:
The door hardware (knob) for offices and classrooms on the 1st and 2nd floor is inaccessible (knobs).
The fixed seating in the multi-tiered Sanger Lecture Hall is inaccessible to persons who use wheelchairs.
Remedy:
1. Provide accessible door hardware where required. Standards § 4.13.9.
2. Ensure that fixed seats at the bottom tier of the lecture hall are readily removable in order to accommodate persons who use wheelchairs in accordance with the ADA. Standards § 4.33.1 et seq.
IV. Restroom Accessibility:
A. Ladies Restroom (Ground Floor)
This restroom is accessible.
Remedy:
1. Provide directional signage to the only accessible Women’s Restroom in Coolidge. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.2, 4.30.3, 4.30.5.
2. Provide directional signage to the accessible Men’s Restroom in Falk at all levels of Coolidge. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.2, 4.30.3, 4.30.5.
B. Women’s Restroom (1st Floor)
Remedy:
1. Provide directional signage to the only accessible Women’s Restroom on the ground floor. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.2, 4.30.3, 4.30.5.
C. Women’s Restroom (2nd Floor)
Remedy:
1. Provide directional signage to the accessible Women’s Restroom on the ground floor. Standards §§ 4.30.1, 4.30.2, 4.30.3, 4.30.5.
V. Miscellaneous Accessibility Issues:
Water fountains are not accessible.
No visual alarms in classrooms.
No 12" extensions on step handrails.
No 12" extensions on stairwell handrails.
Remedy:
1. Install one accessible water fountain on each floor in accordance with ADA standards. In the alternative, install a water cooler with a cup dispenser that is accessible to those who use wheelchairs. Standards §§ 4.15.1, 4.15.2, 4.15.3, 4.15.4, 4.15.5.
2. Install visual fire alarms in the classrooms in accordance with the requirement in paragraph 12 of the Agreement. Standards § 4.28.3.
3. Provide 12" extensions on step handrails. Standards § 4.9.4, Fig. 19 (c) and (d).
4. Provide 12" extensions on stairwell handrails. Standards § 4.9.4, Fig. 19 (c) and (d).
