Summary of Lesson Six

Businesses are responsible for maintaining the accessibility of their facilities and equipment.

When accessible features are blocked or broken, the business is no longer accessible.

Isolated or temporary interruptions in access due to maintenance or repair of accessible features are allowed.

During temporary interruptions, a business must find other ways to make its goods or services available to customers with disabilities.

Questions

1. Do staff know not to block accessible parking spaces, not to block aisles with merchandise or displays, and not to use the area around the accessible toilet to store supplies?

2. Who reminds staff not to do these things?

3. When an aisle is temporarily blocked to restock shelves, do staff know what to do to assist a customer with a disability?

4. If the accessible entrance at your business is not the main entrance, is it open for the same hours that the main entrance is open?

Examples

As a customer using a walker exits a dry cleaner's, an employee is brushing leaves away from the curb ramp area.

A woman using a wheelchair, with a service animal, is opening the door to a convenience store. The store's ice box and newspaper sales box are on the sidewalk, but are away from the door, so they do not block her entrance.

A man using a wheelchair is shopping at a men's store. Adequate aisle space makes it possible for him to move around the sales area.

Inside a department store, the promotional signs for a sale are prominently located, but they do not block the accessible route.

A man using a scooter is selecting milk at a convenience store. Adequate aisle space makes it possible for him to maneuver through the store. 

Two people are clearing snow from an accessible parking space in a video store’s parking lot.

As a man using a wheelchair approaches a convenience store, an employee is moving a newspaper sales box so the store entrance will be accessible.
